Hey fellas, have you modded a plate carrier by removing the cummerbund flap?

I was thinking of removing the flap on my JPC and just run placards and chest rigs across the front.

Ideas? Concerns?

I have. On a fake JPC since I wasn't gutsy enough to wreck a real one haha.

Best option would be to get a JPC 2.0 as it does have a removable flap. I did my mods before it got announced... The big PITA is that since the flap is sewn under the admin, you have to re-sew the admin's lower part after you remove it... which means you have to disassemble the entire plate bag.

The 2.0 looks awesome, and has the features nearly everyone is looking for, but I'm not shelling out whatever they're asking for it.

When I have the down time, I'm going to dig a little deeper into this project...Thanks for the info.

@Seifer_

That's an option, but again, I'm not paying $166 for the tubes.

My point was mostly that if you're looking at someone do it for you, you'll likely pay quite a bit because of all that needs to be done and might as well get the 2.0.
If you want to do it yourself and have a good sewing machine, however, it can be done.
...or you go the easy way and just cut it off, but that's not really ideal.

I took pics of the process, I'll try to find them and post them here.

Ya, I'll be doing it myself. If you can post the pictures, that'd be great.

Taking these pics (below) I realised what I said above was wrong - I did have to open the entire thing to allow me to use removable flaps, however it is not necessary if you merely want to remove the flap.

I had re-sewn a miniflap which allows me to re-attach the flap if needed.

Did I have an AVS flap on hand, I would've tried to make it compatible with them. Adding the clips, however, makes it compatible with BFG chest rigs (here a rackMINUS)...

...Mayflower (here a HK417 recce rig)

... Crye, Velocity Systems placards, etc.

I hope it helps somewhat. Unfortunately I didn't find my progress pics, I'll have to dig more.

That mini flap is genius. Thank you for the pictures - that'll help me out a ton - and if you can find the others, awesome.

Once I find the time to start, I'll try to remember progress pics and post them here.

I went a different route, I removed the front flap and turned that thing itself in a placard. I did not have to open the whole thing up, but then again, it was a repro JPC which may or may not vary in construction. Just wanted to put the option of creating a placard out of the flap out there.

Just something to keep in the back of your head if you actually open the entire thing; If you open one of the serged seams, I'd try to avoid sewing it shut with a lockstitch machine (unless it's a zigzag, that might work). The reason for this is that you could risk having your stitches rip when the fabric stretches.

Thanks for the heads up. Since I can only straight stitch, I was thinking I could just reinforce the seams? Maybe by binding it?

Forgot to add that I'm not completely sure about the JPCs build, and if the stretchy material is sewn to a non-stretchy material you'll most likely be ok with a lockstitch.
