You need heat and shelter. There is no but's or if's.

If you are actively fighting someone, then the weather isn't really bad. And if you aren't actively fighting, then use the heat source and shelter..

@Club-mate:

First, misson defines what kind of gear is needed.

If you are doing an assault during extreme winter conditions, you probably don't need much more than a JIB and a 200 gram type shirt. Although it would probably have to be an important mission if you do it in -40.....the risk increases greatly in those conditions, insofar as cold injuries in addition to trauma.

My point regarding redundancy is that it might not be neccessary to have a 200g, 400g, 600g and JIB as part of your packing list, if a 200g and a JIB will take care of your needs.

You can survive for a few hours with only a JIB in these extreme conditions, combined with activity, but for long term sustainment you need shelter and heat.

@Pete,
like I know Merino is a black/grey fabric,
so if you want to color it, it need to be bleeched and than colored by much chemic.

At the moment I am looking for a better fabric than Merino and found Alpaca Wool.
Look for it, it got some nice features.
Mechanical strong - even more isolating - lighter - higher comfort - no allergic possible - Fire Retardent and a few more things,
but the best:
It comes in natural with maaaany colors.

Tan/Coyote aswell.

50km of my place is a german Alpaca farm :D Crazy but good for me.

I will call them for a visit and hope they can tell me more,
and maybe they can say me someone who does custom tailoring with that :)#

When I´m back from the visit within the next 1-2 weeks I will update you guys.

Greetings
