It doesn't stop shit, even if it's closed to members. It could be spread by a lurking member, or even the most active ones with full respect for the rules at GEARSOC.

If you do not want the picture to be spread, then don't upload it, anywhere. If you are active duty and upload photos of your ninja shit, then people will find them, and they will end up places you did not intend them to go. The owner of MRC is a perfect example of that, he became the "posterboy" for CAG at MP.net via someone finding his photos at LF.

The only thing it does stop, is that non-registered members won't use a lot of bandwidth from this site, and from the sites that people upload their photos.

I was thinking along D Fuze lines with his experience and now pkm's post.
I've too seen a couple of my pics spread on the internet. Lesson learned, I've pretty much stopped posting any picture unless totaly non sensitive...

I was actually wondering if there could be a way to have a dedicated gallery section or "hide/show picture" feature available to "valuable" members only (people with a certain amount of valuable posts), in order to make sure they are "honorable" users...

As my name was mentioned... ;)

I'm willing to play big boy rules. I'll share stuff that I don't hold as sensitive, but I'll water mark it so no one else can claim credit for it. If you repost it else where, then I'll simply pack my shit up and stop sharing. It's that easy.

Watermarks might put some off?

Watermarks don't do anything, just let you know that that is indeed your picture that somebody took and posted on another website.

I think the gallery should be Registered users with 100+ Posts and Admin approval or a similar system. It'll put people off and no doubt slow down site traffic but the people who matter and post interesting pictures will stay. With that being said it will no doubt, the pictures will end up on another website regardless of anything you do.

Not the gallery as a whole for 100+ post... there are users under 100 who contribute, and that'd suck to kick them out of the "general" gallery, which quite frankly is 99% of pictures we got from open sources (Flickrs, mainstream media, Combat Cameras, etc).

But a specific gallery for these users... could be a good idea. It would prevent people coming randomly from Google from reposting them again.

The other option that we had on another forum before a server failure killed it, would be to have a special access group in which people would need to be vetted one by one. Criterias were quite subjective... but that's, honestly, a lot of work.

I would however note, D-Fuze, that for what I can remember, you did not specify it with your picture that you did not want it shared outside of here. I'm sure the user who reposted it had no bad intentions, he probably just though "hey, nice pic". Adding a disclaimer would help lots to prevent this situation from happening again, I'm sure :)

Little offtopic advice: if you take a picture with your phone, or a camera that has embedded GPS... make sure you delete the localisation info. It happened previously on here that I checked a pic's EXIF to see the date it was taken, only to notice GPS coordinates that pointed to some ninja barracks in a remote ninja airfield... I PM'ed the user so he could take care of that, but be careful.

On Windows:
Right click on the pic > Properties > Details > "Delete properties and personal information"

Since I love looking at pictures but never post anything that would suck for me, but things happen. I will say that people always do shit like that, everyone wants to be a cool guy or say they know cool guys etc... Hence all the posers and stolen valor types.

I'm sure someone downloaded those pictures after they got snaked off you and started saying he knows the color of the boathouse at Hereford or however it goes.

I am all ears when it comes to finding a good solution to this problem and I encourage the discussion here. :D

Is there a way to prevent saving image files that are shared? I've seen it on websites, I don't know if it's applicable to forum software. Basically, the most common way I know of involves putting a blank clear .gif over the uploaded image so no one can copy it.

I've seen pic that when you right click on them it pops up a box saying that its copyright. What ppl will do then is just to print screen the page.

Hmm, yes, by putting the image as background of a DIV, and then filling that DIV with a transparent 1x1 GIF resized to the size of the image you actually want to show... easy to circumvent though, but at least it would make it move complicated and would reduce the likeliness of it being reposted -most people just give up (ie: pics in eBay listings).

There is probably an image protection extension for phpBB somewhere.

Disclaimers in posts do fuck all.

I had Simpen remove my Afgh tour photo thread, due to incessant questions via PM about USSF and other stuff, despite making it clear in the first thread that I would not answer questions pertaining to those subjects.

It's just not worth it.

The pic of my 416 setup for Afghanistan that I posted on LF in 2008 found it's way to a norwegian AS board pretty quick. Not a big issue, but a thing to be aware of when posting stuff on line...if you don't want it circulated, don't post it.

Even if I love watching new pics, even more when it's coming from the inside, AGM is right.

If you don't want your pics to be posted on the intrawebz, don't post them.

Whatever you do to keep them private, there's always a way to grab them and repost it elsewhere, by looking at the website source code, make a screenshot, go through the address and URL, I could continue but the list is long...
And I'm not even sure security addons exist for forums, like the transparent gif Conker is talking about. (that's what Flickr is using when a poster don't want his pics to be downloaded, but still you can easily bypass that going through the source code of the page)

You can still watermark them if you want everybody to know where the pics are coming from, but sadly there's always someone who don't care of what you're saying or asking and will post it wherever he wants. That's what I was afraid of when I saw PKM pic in the SEAL's subforum, you can be sure it will be posted elsewhere by some lurkers...

@Essal : I'm not sre MF is really pissed off that his pics are going everywhere on the webs, that's what they're meant to be, that's commercial advertising, if he would have a problem with this, he would have stopped posting more and more pics, IMHO.

What essal is referring to is a pic he (MRC owner) posted on LF in 2004, showing him on operations in Iraq. He was wearing pretty high speed gear for that time period, and the result was a ginormous thread over on MP.net with all the couch commandos arguing wether or not Panzer 1 (his nick on LF) was Delta Force or not. He was serving with 5th SFG at the time.

I can't find the pic though....
