The multicam carrier is either HSGI's Wee- or Wasatch PC.

It might be training purpose only. Anyway, it's starting to turn up everywhere.

Hi Res
Cpl. Xavier Ovando, a reconnaissance man from Downey, Calif., loads magazines May 24 in preparation to fire his pistol. Ovando is a part of the Camp Pendleton, Calif.-based 1st Reconnaissance Battalion and works on the Personal Security Detachment. 1st Recon is currently working through a training package in the Mojave desert to prepare them for their upcoming deployment.

Concerning the pistols shown above...

The new choice of handguns for the USMC reconnaissance-troops is somewhat of an enigma right now. In 2004 Defence Review published an article saying that the USMC was about to purchase 10,000 Glock 37. They later retracted the given article. That was 4 years ago...

Chances might be that they're looking for a replacement handgun for the more pimped 1911 versions used uptil now, taking another glimpse at the .45 model Glock, as well as other alternatives. Maintenance of the handguns used by FR must cost a fortune for the american taxpayers, having in mind how much lead these guys seem to blast away at the shooting range and on missions. The Glock might be a way to cut some corners. But that's just me guessing...

Anyhooo... with the latest pix from militaryphotos.net, the plot thickens...
