Not entirely gear related but I have been looking around at the posts here and I've noticed that a lot of the operators have a alphanumeric patch on their shoulder ie X16, X03 etc. Could any of you enlighten me as to what they mean? http://i290.photobucket.com/albums/ll260/JKinnaird/Reference%20Pictures/US%20Army%20SF%20and%20CAG/Untitled.jpg

Also, this past summer I was at Connaught ranges in Ontario and I spotted a few canadian soldiers in Multicam. Does anyone know which specific cansof unit they are from? I've heard rumors they are JTF1. Thanks!

They are callsigns, basically your "name".

To the best of my knowledge, the reason they were created was to provide identification under NODs (although nowadays tech makes this point essentially moot IMO) and/or provide enhanced radio persec/comsec, instead of using real names in certain cases.
It also provides some help for IDing team members when wearing balaclavas.

That being said, I think it's more a tactical trend than a real operational necessity for the vast majority of users.

i have seen it used in the same context how we use badge numbers on the radio. I don't say "hey jim, its joe, where you be son?" but rather, "302, 2913, 10-20?"

When I was in, we called these our "roster" numbers.....I'm now on my agency's SRT, we wear our badge number.
