Invented by CoD:MW3, if memory serves.

Can't really see the point, to be honest.
If anything, a horizontal rail extension along the rear edge of the helmet would be a more sensible way to go.

I would have said Ghost Recon future soldier

Anyhow, it really doesn't look usefull that way. I'd see a potential interest in a small top rigid anchor point/rail for strobes, but that's about it.

That said, there's a company out there that is about to release some center mounting system (albeit looking pretty different) that is loosely based on the same concept.

...and two NVG shrouds left and right of the top rail?

Well, since I see applications of lights and contours preferred on the top of the helmet, I guess that would work as a secure contour mount on the top of the helmet if you can't believe in velcro.

Damn, with their fu**ed up scale, I hadn't even noticed that those were NVGs base plates.

Good point on the helmet cams, although the only potential location would be top of the helmet in order to obtain a flat angle.

Guys, you do realize that those things are designed by artists that have no real clue of the application but decide purely on what looks badass (because that ultimately generates more revenue)?
As for actually being useful, I don't think so...the advantage of rails is that you have not 1 position to mount something but 5 or 6 or 7. This makes sense on the side (although we would have been loved at by any gear-related person some years ago!) since you can position headsets where they sit comfortably. What do you wear on top of your helmet that needs to be in a special location?

A solid, fixed position mounting interface on the back for strobes etc. would be great though...

Dude, did we say otherwise?
Everybody agrees with the fact that a center rail would't see much use, that is, untill that crazy wilcox cam/battery MHRS system becomes standard issue
